Dear Editor:
Just when there was a shimmer of golden sun shaking through the trees in Darfur (The U.N. Security Council approved a 26000-strong peacekeeping force in august), came the disturbing news that 10 African Union peacekeepers were killed and another 50 still missing.
After reading the news reports a sense of desolation and disillusionment overwhelmed me.
Is this ever going to stop? After 200,000 killed and 2 million homeless in four years, and atrocities that includes mass murder, wholesale rape and burning of villages, I would have expected international outrage and condemnation and a call for action by every citizen of the world, instead, there is pervasive silence; this hush wraps everyone in a blanket of content.
Even though it seems as though there is no glint of hope for the people of Darfur, you can get involved and do something to reverse the perpetual gloom and seclusion of life that Darfurians are experiencing. A good start is to contact the Guyanese United for Darfur (GUD) at gudnow@gmail.com.
Yours Faithfully,
Clinton Urling
